What is so special about Tongass National Forest?
Tongass National Forest is the nation's largest national forest that covers most of Southeast Alaska with nearly 17 million acres. This forest is also the largest contiguous temperate rainforest in the world and has one of the most diverse ecosystems in the country.
What do we need to bring with us on the hikes?
If you're planning a trip to a rainforest, it's important to pack the right gear. A good pair of athletic or hiking shoes that can handle getting wet and dirty is a must, along with a comfortable pair of socks to prevent blisters. Don't forget to check the weather before you go as rain and cold temperatures can be common even in the summer months.
Will you be providing anything for the hike?
Great news! We've got you covered for your adventure. Every hiker will receive a string backpack and a bottle of water to carry. For those who want to take it up notch, we offer an add-on option to purchase the backpack. Safety is our top priority, so we'll also have a first aid kit and disposal bags to ensure we follow the leave no trace rule.
What happens if there is an emergency or accident during the hike?
I will be carrying a Bivy Satellite device that will be used to contact first responders if there is an emergency. I will also have a first aid kit, epi pens, and both energy and glucose gels, I am certified with red cross in cpr and first aid.
Can anyone go on these hikes?
While none of these trails are difficult, they are not wheelchair-accessible. Hikers need to be able to walk 2-4 miles without difficulty or needing much assistance, have good balance, and not have any major health issues. If you have kids under 8 that you are wanting to take on one of the trails, please book a private tour.
How do we get to the trailheads?
I will meet you at the visitor's center on Berth 2. I will be holding an Island Girl Hiking Company sign. Once we have everyone we will walk to the vehicle and drive to the trail head. The drive will be anywhere from 30 min - 45 min depending on the trailhead. If you are berthing at Ward Cove, you will take a bus to berth 4 and walk to berth 2. we may be able to schedule a pick up at ward cove if timing works out, After booking please reach out to see if that is an option on the day of your hike.
Will we return to the berth before our ship leaves?
We take this question seriously and will make sure that you are back at the berths well before your re-embark time. Keep in mind that this may mean that our hike length is shorter depending on the fitness and skill level of others that are on the hike with us.
